Workshop: Physics of Flight

(Quicklink: https://nescitech.org/flight)

Join a new interactive workshop about the basics of flight with David Moon, student instructor at NEST.

Three-Week workshop, Sundays, March 15, 22, 29, 12:30-2:30 pm. For grades 4-8.

Physics of Flight
Class I: Basic Physics and Math - Newton’s laws, vectors, trigonometry
Class 2: More physics, aircraft movement - Bernoulli’s principle, kinematics
Class 3: Advanced Flight - Different types of planes, competition

Class I
     ● Part 1: Basic Physics: Newton’s 3 laws with short demos and student predictions
     ● Part 2: Math: Vectors using arrows, walking directions, and plane motion
     ● Part 3: Dynamics (Physics) connecting forces to moving paper planes
     ● Part 4: Paper plane building and guided test flights
     ● Part 5: Kahoot/online game on topics learned
     ● Part 6: Paper planes & dynamics explanation using student designs

Class II
     ● Part 1: Bernoulli’s Principle with simple airflow demonstrations
     ● Part 2: Video on Bernoulli’s principle with discussion
     ● Part 3: Center of mass, center of lift using paper clips and paper airplanes
     ● Part 4: Yaw, Pitch, Roll using body motions and plane examples
     ● Part 5: Kinematics: tracking where the plane is over time
          ○ Position, Velocity, and Acceleration: VERY basic idea of change and motion over time
     ● Part 6: Kahoot again

Class III: Advanced Flight
     ● Part 1: Control surfaces through paper plane modifications
     ● Part 2: Different types of planes
          ○ High speed planes with small wings
          ○ Low speed long distance planes with big wings
          ○ Load and weight effects on flight
     ● Part 3: Video of the longest flying paper plane
     ● Part 4: Video of the furthest flying plane
     ● Part 5: Competition to make planes fly the furthest
